ISO 14001:2015
Emergency Preparedness and Response (ISO 14001 Clause 8.2)
How to identify potential emergencies and plan your response to prevent environmental damage.
Introduction
Accidents happen. ISO 14001 requires you to be ready when they do. You must establish, implement, and maintain the processes needed to prepare for and respond to potential emergency situations.
Steps to Compliance
1. Identify Potential Emergencies
Look at your environmental aspects. What could go wrong?
- Chemical spills.
- Fire / Explosion (releasing toxic smoke).
- Flood (washing pollutants into drains).
- Tank rupture.
2. Plan the Response
For each scenario, define:
- Immediate Actions: Stop the leak, sound the alarm, evacuate.
- Mitigation: Use spill kits, close storm drains.
- Communication: Call fire department, notify environmental agency, inform neighbors.
3. Test the Plan (Drills)
You must periodically test the planned response actions.
- Desktop Exercise: Talk through a scenario.
- Live Drill: Actually deploy the spill kit or evacuate the building.
4. Review and Revise
After a drill or a real incident, review the process. Did it work? What needs to change?
