Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) Tool

A step-by-step tool to break down a job, identify hazards in each step, and define controls.

Overview

JHA (also known as JSA) is a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way to identify hazards before they occur.

Steps

  1. Select the Job: Pick a job to analyze (e.g., “Changing a forklift battery”).
  2. Break it Down: List the steps in order.
    • Step 1: Park forklift.
    • Step 2: Disconnect battery.
    • Step 3: Remove battery.
  3. Identify Hazards: For each step, ask “What could go wrong?”
    • Step 3 Hazard: Back strain, acid splash, crushing fingers.
  4. Define Controls: How do we prevent it?
    • Control: Use hoist, wear face shield, wear gloves.

Use Case

Use this for non-routine tasks or high-risk activities.
